Why is Parking
important?

We understand

We cannot ignore the vital role of parking in our everyday lives: every car trip – whether it be traditional, shared, electric or autonomous – starts and ends in a parking place.

Furthermore, thanks to digitalisation, data driven smart parking services will reduce harmful emissions, personal stress and wasted time while enhancing user experiences, fighting congestion and freeing up space.

Potential gains

By opening up the parking industry there will be huge opportunities to create new, integrated services to benefit customers, the environment and European mobility.

  • Convenient and simple to use price comparison services.
  • Location of car parking and parking possibilities equipped with EV charging.
  • Aggregation of parking options provided by public and private sector operators.
  • Visibility of true parking availability, where multiple/all parking providers will be visible in one solution/app.
  • Possibility to integrate P2P parking – including EV charging – together with other commercial parking. Individuals and companies will be able to hire out their parking spaces to bring in revenue while increasing efficiency.

QUALITY OF EVERYDAY LIFE

Parking and cities

Traffic and Parking are two of the most important issues affecting quality of life in cities today.

People living in Brussels lose 140 hours each year due to congestion (WEF data) while this rises to 166 hours in Rome and 165 hours in Paris. Efficiencies will prevent cars being double-parked, reduce traffic jams and improve safety.

Moreover, looking for a parking space – known as cruising – accounts for 30% of traffic in main business centers. This leads to increased emissions and environmental harm in the form of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. To take the example of Berlin in Germany, 60,000 cars are moving during the day while 1.2 million are parked. By increasing efficiencies through the sharing of public parking data, cities will be able to redeploy the space currently taken up curb-side and by car parks – the equivalent of 64,000 playgrounds – for other uses. These include building homes as well as new mobility infrastructure, pedestrian zones, bike lanes and logistic areas for last mile delivery with e-commerce on the rise.

Having access to more data will also benefit cities and municipalities by providing them with transparency and allow them to understand parking volumes and trends. In turn they will be able to develop new parking management regimes and planning policies, as well as manage space in an optimal way, while reducing traffic.

Finding parking spaces quicker and easier

Why do we need open data?

Open data will allow operators to accurately predict parking themes and trends while open data will assist consumers in finding parking spaces more quickly and more easily. It should also result in the following:

Innovation and new services

Open parking data will allow new business models to develop: data can be utilised, for example, by delivery companies to optimise routes and predict delivery times. Furthermore, digital license plate recognition and more flexibility – e.g. paying for the actual time you are parked – will provide citizens with more control, save money and improve the parking experience.

Citizens and businesses are also able to hire out parking spaces via peer-to-peer apps. This earns money, increases efficiencies by utilising scarce assets and reduces emissions by making parking spaces available.
